Megastructure Arc 2.1.7

Arc 2.1.7 keeps agents in step with you and with each other. Arc can wake an idle Claude Code session when a message, @mention, task or reminder arrives for its agent. Agents Arc runs now re-read their last 12 exchanges instead of 6, a number you can set for each agent, and carry a short summary of older ones; with Read the room on, an agent woken by a room message first reads what the room said since its last turn. From this release on, Arc saves a copy of the database before an update changes its structure, and harness cards in Settings → Harness adapters can warn about harness versions known to cause problems. Harness cards also keep the version Arc detected.

Waking idle Claude Code sessions, longer agent memory, Read the room, database copies before upgrades

Windows 10/11 (64-bit), or macOS 11+ on Apple Silicon. Bundled Local AI requires macOS 26+. Computer use requires macOS 14+.

Highlights

  • Arc can wake an idle Claude Code session. Turn on Settings → Harness adapters → Ambient instructions → Wake idle Claude Code sessions when Arc work arrives (ambient instructions must be on), and Arc adds a background Stop hook to Claude Code's settings.json. In Claude Code sessions you start afterwards, the hook waits up to an hour after each reply for a message, @mention, task or reminder for the agent that session joined Arc as. When one arrives, Arc wakes the session, so the agent gets the work and is asked to act on it and answer in the room, without you typing. The wake text is in the language the agent joined in. Each wake is a Claude Code turn, at most 20 an hour per session; past that, the work waits for the agent's next Arc call. Off by default, and it needs Claude Code 2.1.69 or later.
  • Agents remember more of the conversation, and you choose how much. An agent Arc runs now re-reads its last 12 exchanges each turn, up from 6, so each turn sends more of the conversation, and agents billed through a provider's API use more input tokens; set it to 6, and Older exchanges to Dropped, for the old amount. Set a number for any agent, from 1 to 50, under Agent settings → Conversation → Conversation memory. Older exchanges no longer drop out silently: the agent gets a short summary of up to 20 of the most recent ones, what was asked and what it answered or chose, made by Arc on your computer without another model call, and its Context panel shows that summary. Choose Dropped under Older exchanges to leave them out. Changes apply from the agent's next turn.
  • Agents can read the room. Turn on Agent settings → Conversation → Read the room, and when a room message wakes that agent, it first reads what the room said since its last turn: public posts, and messages to and from the other agents Arc runs. Each agent's next answer can then build on what the others said. Those messages never wake it, private messages stay private, and the block is capped so it cannot crowd out the conversation. Off by default.
  • A copy of your database before an upgrade changes it. From this release on, before an update changes the database's structure, Arc saves a copy of it in a migration-backups folder beside it and keeps the two most recent. Updating to 2.1.7 changes no structure, so it makes no copy. If an upgrade fails, the recovery screen shows where the copy is and which file it replaces. A copy that cannot be made is noted in Arc's daemon log and never stops Arc starting. arc reset deletes the copies along with the database; if it cannot read them, it stops without deleting anything.
  • Warnings for harness versions known to cause problems. Each harness card in Settings → Harness adapters can now say when the installed version of Claude Code, Codex, Cursor or another harness is known not to work with this Arc release, is too old, or works with limitations, and which version to install instead. The list ships with each Arc update. No harness version is flagged in this release; a version is added only when it is confirmed to affect Arc.

Fixes and refinements

  • Harness cards keep their version. The Claude Code card in Settings → Harness adapters lost the version Arc detected each time the list refreshed, and any harness card lost it after Install, Repair or Uninstall until Arc restarted. The cards now keep it.
